My passion for wildlife is what drives my photography and it is what has inspired me to put together a collection fine art wildlife prints. These images are much more than just animal portraits. They’re a combination of creative techniques, patience and of course wonderful subjects. Hopefully you’ll find something inspiring to grace the walls of your home or office. Enjoy.

Limited Edition of 125. Black and white photography can be a great way of showing wildlife in a more artistic light. This pied shag taking off shows this really well, as the removal of colour helps you concentrate on the detail of the feathers, and adds atmosphere to the shot. Limited Edition of 125. Photographing from a kayak can give you a great angle of view and perspective, especially when photographing waders and other birds that frequent rivers, lakes and estuaries. On this occasion it was a Sacred Kingfisher (Halcyon sancta) that happened to catch my attention. Taken in Raglan Harbour at low tide meant I was able to conceal myself by paddling up one of the small tributaries that feed into the harbour. At low tide these tributaries are a great way of concealing yourself, as they sit much lower that the surrounding mud flats. This was particularly useful when trying to creep up on this kingfisher as they are normally very skittish and will fly off at the slightest disturbance. Not only was I able to conceal myself but being able to shoot from such a low angle added more intimacy to the image and it helped me separate the kingfisher from the background. The small branches protruding from the mud, which the bird had chosen for its lookout, also help frame the bird rather nicely. Printed on Ilford Smooth Cotton Rag 310gsm.

Open Edition - A fernbird (Bowdleria punctata) stretches its legs and holds onto the dead grass steams as it climbs out of the vegetation. This image took three days to capture. I had to return to the same area each day hoping to get the image I had envisaged. It can often be painstaking when you’re determined to get a specific image. When it did finally get into the position I wanted I had just a couple of seconds to take the shot. Preparation is the key and this time it paid off. Printed on Museo Silver Rag 300gsm. This image got me through to be a finalist in the ANZANG Nature Photographer of the Year 2016.

Open Edition - Gannets often circle over the colony looking for a landing spot. Using a slow shutter speed, to capture the motion, I tracked the birds as they flew over, the warm hues of the sunset adding to the atmosphere. Printed on Hahnemühle PhotoRag 308gsm.

Open Edition - The intense colours and textures we find in nature, especially some of our wildlife, fills me with wonder. It’s this reason I purposely cropped off the head of this green gecko (not literally I can assure you). By removing its head from view, the colour, texture and shape of this unique little animal are really emphasised. Printed on Museo Silver Rag 300gsm.

Open Edition - From previous visits to the wild, west coast beach of Ruapuke, on New Zealand's North Island, I had discovered that on a low spring tide there's a small group of rocks that house a colony of starfish (Stichaster australis). As the tide retreats the exposed rocks reveal a mass of interlocking tentacles. The late afternoon sun really brought out the intense orange colours of the starfish, but as a result the contours and textures of these unusual creatures seemed lost in these vibrant colours. For this reason I decided to process the image as a black and white version of the scene, which really intensifies the textures and brings real depth to the composition. Open Edition - Australasian gannets are expert gliders, often using the updraft from waves, like this one as it heads back to the colony at Muriwai. It took the right conditions and a lot of patience for everything to fall into place as I knew I wanted to photograph the gannet flying straight towards me, being followed by a large breaking wave, and slightly backlit by the low angle of the evening sun.
